The Africa of Our Imaginations: Botswana

We’ve been wandering about Botswana, and I am afraid I’ve not had much time to keep up with the blog. Partly because we have been moving around so much, and partly because we’ve had too much stuff in too small of a camper making daily life rubiks cube living. Shifting bags constantly to make room for our bodies. The rest of the time has been, well, complicated. Nothing is very easy here. Internet is excruciatingly slow. Making a reservation for camping in the national game reserves requires a visit to the office of the concessionaires who manage the campsites and another to the wildlife service office. Neither is brief nor speedy. It seems like everything we do involves a fair amount of extra time and waiting. Camping also often provides us with dead computer batteries.

Don’t get me wrong. I actually really like Botswana. The wild places are truly wild, the people are open and friendly and helpful. Free from the history of colonialism of its neighbors, Botswana is irrefutably African. The stable government protects the wildlife and tourism. We have finally found here the Africa of our imaginations.

This post is an apology of sorts. Making excuses for myself, maybe. We’ve done a quite a lot over the past couple of weeks, stories I’ll tell as we have time. Please forgive the silence. We’ve had hyena and lions and hippos and elephants in our camp, some during the day while we were outside. Our rented Land Rover the girls named Grover died, permanently, in a remote camp on the Okavango Delta. I watched a thief in the night climb over the campground wall and approach our tent in Maun. We walked with local San Bushmen, learning about native plants and eating roasted beetles in the Kalahari. But, I’ve not had much time to sit down and write to you, our friends, family, and followers, here. More is coming soon…
