Izu Oshima Island Storm Shelter
We came across this concrete culvert sitting by the road near the southern shore of the island. It was not until we hiked the vocano the next day and a thunderstorm rolled in abruptly that we understood why they were placed about the island. The island loop is popular with bicyclists who would need shelter from lightening should they be caught out in a sudden storm.
